I have been coaching hockey for 13 years now at all levels. I started collecting statistics for each game 11 years ago. I would have a parent keep track of plus/minus & shots by player. The stat keeper would try to identify the goal scorer and get the assists on each goal because referees tend to miss the first and/or second assist. I created a simple program to combine the score sheet information with the stats kept by my parent statistician. During and at the end of the year, I would run reports for each player showing their statistics for each game and the team statistics in summary.
This past year, I was assistant coach and manager for the Valley Forge Minutemen midget major team. Since most of the players on this team aspired to play hockey at upper level either in juniors, prep schools or college programs, I created a website to view the statistics for each player on the team. I registered the website domain www.minutemen18u.com and I hosted the site.
The website turned out better than I had anticipated. I realized that I could easily add other teams to my server and use the basic website design to host other teams. All I needed to do was provide an easy way for the stats to be entered to the web site. I created a simple interface where stats can be entered through a web site. An entire games stats can be entered in five minutes or less.
That's how I started the website www.hockeystatkeeper.com to offer a hosting and statistic service to other teams.
